About me
As the Foster Care Consultant for MDE, Kathleen is responsible for ensuring that the requirements set forth within the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) for students experiencing foster care are developed, implemented and monitored, but most importantly, for providing and assisting with technical assistance to stabilize the educational experience across the state for those students.
Kathleen began her career with MDE in June of 2013 with the Office of Special Education as a special education consultant on the Monitoring and Technical Assistance Team. Prior to working for the Michigan Department of Education, Kathleen taught special education for several years before moving on to work at the Intermediate School District level as a Pre-K through 12th grade special education teacher consultant. Kathleen spent the next several years as a district administrator responsible for all special education programming, multi-tiered systems of support (MTSS) implementation, data management, curricular alignment across programs and ensuring at-risk programs met all federal and state requirements.
Kathleen received her bachelor’s degree in biology with an additional Secondary Teaching Certificate from Olivet College, a master’s degree in special education from Madonna University and has completed 38 post-graduate credits toward a second master’s degree in Education Leadership with Grand Valley University.
